(Mahoromatic earned a meager 6.5 on IMDB, what the hell?)

Okay, so here's the story of Hoshi no Koe: It's the year 20X6, or it might as well be. This middle school girl and her boyfriend are in love, etc, "I hope we go to the same high school!". Well not so fast, bitch, you're going to war. That's right! A 15 year old girl is drafted to pilot a mech as part of humanity's last best hope to strike back at an alien menace! It's never explained why or how the UN Space Force is drafting people not even old enough to drive, it doesn't matter, apparently.

But it's okay, because she's got her cell phone! She can text message him! I'm not making this up or exaggerating. So he checks his cell phone constantly waiting for any comminique from her. The entire story is told with her in the mech's cockpit in her school uniform, as if they didn't give her time to change before she left Earth and then locked her in the mech permanantly. Most of the time we see her sitting there, in the fetal position, holding her cell phone. And her boyfriend doesnt seem to do anything but stare at his cell phone and sleep in empty classrooms.

Eventually, she gets to Pluto, they get attacked, and they warp 1 light year out to the Oort Cloud and she sends him a message along the lines of "This message will take a year to get to you, but I'm still right here!".

Shortly after that they jump to 8 light years from Earth. So of course she sends him another text message! "You're 24 now, but I'm still 15. I miss Earth." But Sobby McEmopants had already given up on ever hearing from her again, or at least thats what he claims. Let's ignore the fact that he kept the same phone the whole time so that if she DID text him, he'd be able to get it.

But it doesn't matter because the entire planet they're exploring turns out to be a huge alien den, and they start picking off the Earth battlecruisers. The girl, somehow the only one left, decides she has to protect the last capital ship from the gigantic alien fleet, so she goes to the nose of the ship, adds her meager firepower to the already-ineffective battleship-class weaponry pouring out of the last earth ship, then goes out in a blaze of glory, somehow making her tiny mech's beam saber strong enough to cleave an alien cruiser. For some reason this loss of a single ship cripples the alien fleet enough to allow the earth ship to warp away.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention the animation, it was awful. The actual animation was sketchy and choppy, and the CGI for the mech scenes was also choppy and just plain poorly done.

The voice acting in this version was suck, because it was done by the director and his fiance. Apparently there was another VO done by professionals, but I don't care enough to find it.

The only redeeming qualities were the background art, a little bit of the music, the box art, and the merciful fact that it's only ~25 minutes long.

Warning: Anime

Ah! My Goddess!
I must admit, I'm a freaking sucker for anime that's just...well...nice. That's probably how I'd best describe it. It reminds me of Mahoromatic (which, once I watched it, instantly became one of my all time favorites) in that it's got easily likable main characters who have a not unhealthy, though relatively platonic, relationship, among other things.

Actually - and I'm writing this off-the-cuff - It's actually got a surprisingly large number of similarities. Hmm, I think I'll look up the writers for both.

Anyway, the story is good, as of episode 10. It's generally lighthearted, but I think it might get a bit more serious later on (just like Mahoromatic, hmmm). The humor is there, and is decent. The character design for the goddesses is fantastic, I must say, and the artwork overall is very good, despite being relatively old. (1993)

It's not all just sentimental stuff. There's some action every once and a while, and good secondary characters abound to keep things light. The special effects are good, again, for their age, and the music isn't bad either.

Anyway, I think this is an anime that anybody who doesnt mind anything a little sentimental can enjoy. I haven't got a single greivance to air about it, so I guess I'll just leave it at that for the time being.

Jon Stewart of the Daily Show weighs in on Senator Ted Stevens

Simply put, and I quote, "Who the F**k is Ted Stevens".

For more info on Ted Stevens, see yesterday's post.

YouTube Most of the posts on it are quite old and, frankly, a little embarrassing. I could delete them and start fresh, but there's no harm in leaving them, I suppose.

As to why I'm writing this, well, I don't really know, just felt like writing...typing...whatever. I'm probably going to end up just posting links to shit like I did before. Original content? Me?! ell oh ell, no. Maybe a little stream of consciousness ADD writing though.

I Cthulhu By Neil Gaiman
Ok, so check this out. I was browsing Wikipedia's article on Cthulhu (Blame Castlevania:SotN) and found this short story written by Gaiman back in the late '80s. Pretty cool if you have a rudimentary knowledge of the Mythos, which Wikipedia had helped me acquire shortly before reading it. Pretty entertaining, but a little cheesy. Seems to be a less refined and far more casual piece of work than his hit novels (which reminds me, I need to finish Neverwhere... I wonder if Adam knows I have it...).

Guild Wars
Still rocks. GW>WoW.
Hit LV20 in Prophecies tonight. Apparently in Factions you can hit 20 in a day, but in Prophecies it takes a month of casual play. Still way better than WoW. I really think the gameplay in Guild Wars gets better as you go deeper, and learn its little intricacies. Glad I came back to this great game, and glad it's still free after initial purchase.

Xbox Media Center and Team Blackbolt's XBMC360 Skin
Two words: Hot Damn.
So, I wasn't really playing my xbox at all, right? One day Aaron says "hey, im softmodding my xbox! It's gonna be tubular!" and I reply, "That is relevant to my interests! We should mod mine too!"
But before I could synch up with Aaron, Topher is all "Yo, holmes* I jus' been modded my xboxen! It's the shizzle!" "Intriguging! I was going to do the same with Aaron!" "Well....come to my place and we can do it tomorrow!"
So, we modded my xbox, and now it's my happymachine of media goodness.
It's real purdy too.
*to bel air

Anime
Eureka Seven: Rocks
Haruhi: Rocks
School Rumble: Dear translators, learn some fucking grammar and spelling. (This entry, I mean)

Hey guys, how ya doin? Oh yeah? Hm, well that's good to hear.
Anyway, I've been putting this post off for a few days. Figured it was about time to actually do it. If I do everything I've planned on, this'll probably be the richest post yet. Then again, I usually run out of steam or forget things. Oh well, we'll see how it goes. I'll just dive on in.

Indie Games
No, not Indiana Jones. Independent games. I was watching The Screen Savers on G4TechTV and caught a segment about indie games, and specifically an indie game site called Game Tunnel. Decided to check out their list of the best indie games of 2004, and downloaded a bunch of demos. Some were good. Some had annoying demo limits. Some didn't float my boat. But these did:

BreakQuest by Nurium Games
Price: $20 (Demo available - 5 levels)
Ok, so you've seen DXBall, Breakout, Arkanoid, blah blah blah. It's old news, it's played out. Well this game flies in the face of all that and says "Hey guys, I'm actually freakin' awesome!" And awesome it is. My first impression of this game was "This is the Rez of Breakouts." And while that's not entirely accurate, I still hold to it, because it's just that good. It's got a very robust physics engine, innovative weapons/powerups/powerdowns, very original stage designs, crisp graphics, and great sound. Just the five levels I played in the demo were very satisfying, and the full game has 100 different stages. Best Breakout Ever? BreakQuest has MY vote.

Hamsterball Gold by Raptisoft
Price: $15 (Demo available - timed, I think)
Remember Marble Madness on the NES? If you don't, let's just say it's probably what the underlying inspiration for Super Monkey Ball is. The concept: you're a marble. You want to get to the goal. There's a tricky environment full of pitfalls, traps, and other things designed to get in your way. That's it. Well this is Marble Madness, only in true 3D and a hamster in a ball. It takes that same old gameplay concept, gives it a fresh coat of paint, a tune up, and hangs a little pine air freshener from the mirror. The levels I played were good, but then the "demo over!" screen popped up and I havent really picked it up since. It was worth the time i spent with it. Reccommended.

Glace by Tommy Visic
Price: Totally free!
Glace is the quintissential platformer. You get some nifty abilities, romp through colorful environments full of colorful stuff, jump around and stuff, you know the drill. The story, from what I've seen, is lame and pretty much throwaway. It's still a good game. I like the abilities you get. I'd appreciate a bit more variety, though.

Those are the only games that I really enjoyed out of the ones I played. All were found via Game Tunnel. Check them out for more great games and their reviews of these games.

Flash Movies
Found some good ones for you guys.

8-Bitch5: EvilOnTheAttack By: Disaster Labs
The Arfenhouse crew is back, baby! Honestly, I shouldnt have to say anything else. Pure hilarity.

FF: Mixed in Balamb 2 (1/3) By: 5-7
This really surprised me. I think I remember passing up the first installment in this series, seeing the title and passing it off as yet another FF flash. I decided to give this a shot and, to my amazement, it was actually quite good. Watch it, it doesn't disappoint.

Green Brown By: thirstyforchicken
Just a nicely done little fight scene.

Super Mario Gaming World By Blordow
Another Mario movie. More on it once I've played it. The client download is 300mb

30 Minute PS2 Mod
Mod your PS2 in under 30 minutes for under 30 bucks. It's totally ghetto, but probably worth the money you save.

Best Wallpapers Ever?
The description in the digg article sums it up well. I'll highlight those links another day.

For now though, I'm going to pull a list of the best Newgrounds flashes I've seen out of my ass. That's right, straight out of my ass. There's a pretty thought for ya. I can't go to Newgrounds right now, so I'm probably going to forget some of them, but some might say that ones that don't stand out in the mind must not be that great. See it however you want, the list is there regardless.

Dad's Home - The last sequence alone is a 5/5
Banana Phone - The subject so many of our in-jokes. Too bad it's kinda stale now
Bitey of Brackenwood - this whole series is beautiful
Incompetent Chivalry - The beans are boiling over, my son
Mega Man vs Quick Man - Superb animation, aside from the fact that mega man doesnt seem to have a neck
Arfenhouse t3h movie: TOO!!!!1 - If ya get it, ya get it.
Decline of Video Games series - great parodies. i wish santa leveled up MY characters...

A few more to come, I'm dead tired. I wrote this a little bit at a time so it's taken hours, and I wanna get it online. Links to these coming soon too.

In other news
There's a corportation named "Schwing America". They make concrete pump trucks with boom arms, and have an awesome name.

Finally
Heres a GTA:SA related vid curtosey Jones.
http://poststuff.entensity.net/012605/media.php?media=gta-sanandreas.wmv
Edit: got a description from said contributor (now with punctuation! no capitalization though)
"um, guy jumps off this cliff. right as he makes the jump a plane sideswipes him. chances are one in a million."
What an energetic and robust synopsis. They figured the popularity would gurantee a sizable donation, and even got waivers from all the participant's parents condoning the violent nature of the game. But the school board put a halt on it, saying that it couldn't allow anything that promoted violence in any way. The students said that they didn't believe the problem was with the game, but with the school district itself, which canceled last year's Halloween festivities out of respect for (get this) wiccans!
Oh California, you so crazy.

Might edit in some more "content" (I still chuckle at that one) later on tonight. We'll see.

[Later that evening...] (where's a comcbook font when you need it?)
Guess what, kids! Time for more links!

www.homokaasu.org
They've got some slick games, plus it's the home of the ever-awesome Rasterbator! I know how I'm pimping my dorm! Some good examples I've found: 1 2 3 4 Hey, is that a Combine soldier in 3? Hundreds of more, and the ability to make your own at the site, check it out if you still haven't!

zomg! First Poast!

Welcome...
Welcome to City 17.
Oh wait, sorry. Never mind that.
Anyway, I know what you're thinking. You're probably thinking "Oh god, he's got a journal, he's gonna REALLY bitch now!" But (surprose surprise!) that's not the case! This isn't gonna be a livejournal, it's mainly gonna be a receptacle for all the cool shit I find on the interwebs. So please don't fear.testing

Let me reiterate that point: This is not a bitch space! I'm guranteeing right here that it's gonna be 100% angst free. I may still use this as a place to chronicle some events, but I dbout it'll be too often, and most likely it'll be something short, something like this:

Ray's birthday rocked.

See, that didn't hurt much, now did it? Okay, let's get you a sesame street band-aid and a lollipop.

But, like I said, this is primarily going to be a place for me to put cool shit, so hey, lets get started with that, shall we?

Stuff that I feel is cool:

http://www.kevinrose.com
This guy's cool.

http://www.hitchhikersmovie.com
Like I've already said to some of you, Forty Fucking Two, baby.

http://www.opcoder.com/projects/chrono/
SquareEnix issued a cease and desist, and I died a little inside.
Watch the trailer, and you'll see why.

Alright, thats enough for now.
Oh, and if any of you read this, post a comment or tell me or something, otherwise I'll have no way of knowing anybody's reading this. (haha! someone reading this! that's a good one! wooh, i crack me up)

Be careful you don't get the uh-ohs with your no-nos.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://shincap.blogspot.com/2005/01/zomg-first-poast.html' title='zomg!
